Fairtrade ‘Tea Dance’ storms the Streets of Tunbridge Wells

Tea Dance with a Difference

Over 50 street dancers took Calverley Precinct in Tunbridge Wells by surprise in an awareness raising stunt for Fairtrade Fortnight on Saturday 6th March. Inspired by the recent T-Mobile ‘flash mob’ advertisement on Liverpool Street Station, the aim of the Tea Dance was to bring a focus on the plight of Tea producers in the developing world. The fun filled event was part of the Fairtrade Town celebrations for Fairtrade Fortnight and over 200 people, including the Mayor, stopped to watched the dance and enjoy a cup of Fairtrade Tea.

The dance was choreographed by the fantastic Eximo Dance team and the dancers came from the local area including, the McAllister Brown Dance School, Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School, The Skinners School, Beechwood, Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys and others.

The Fairtrade T-Dance was ‘urban style’ in contrast with the recent Valentines Day Tea Dance in the Assembly Hall Theatre, which announced its swap to Fairtrade at the event. This decision to switch to Fairtrade was part of the ongoing commitment of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to Fairtrade and marks the fourth anniversary of Fairtrade Town status.
