Tunbridge Wells Fairtrade Town

Our opportunity to work for a fairer world

There are still over 2 billion people living on less than $2 a day. One way we can help to stop this injustice is to buy Fairtrade products. Fairtrade puts the poorest of the poor first, tackling poverty and injustice through fairer trade practices.

Fairtrade Town Status is Renewed

The Fairtrade Town Group is celebrating the successful renewal of the Towns’ Fairtrade Status and presented the certificate to the new Leader of the Council, Cllr Atwood. Fairtrade Fortnight is in full swing and schools across the town are busy painting their Fairtrade Cotton bunting ready for a new Fairtrade Community Art Project to be installed in Calverley Precinct from the 15th March.

Farmers in developing countries work hard to secure a living and support their families, only to see the fruits of their labour swallowed through unjust global trading systems. These allow multinationals to flood the markets with cheaper produce, eventually forcing them out of business. They sink deeper into the spiral of debt and poverty in their struggle to survive.

The Fairtrade foundation works with farmers, guaranteeing a fair price for their produce, plus a social premium for business or community development. By supporting these producers we are standing up for justice in the market place. Simply by using our consumer power we can change the world for the better.

"Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness
like a never-failing stream" Amos 5:24
